Squash stew

This is what I get from watching Family Outing shows too much. They make many stews like this, just by eyeballing what they have and put in the pot. I was curious what it would taste like so I thought I'd try to make it. Without any ramen seasonings, like they like to use.

So, this what I make with what I have in the fridge.

2 medium size zucchini
2 medium size crooked neck squash
1 onion
2 cloves garlic
3 sheets fish cake
10 cups water
3 tablespoon kochujang (korean chili paste)
salt and pepper

Boil water in a large pot.

Chop onion, zucchini, squash. Mash and chop garlic cloves. Slice fish cake to small pieces.
Put all the ingredient above and kokujang in boiling water. Stir to mix well. Add salt and pepper to taste.
Simmer until the vegetables are a bit tender.

Serve with rice.

Zucchini Parmesan

It works! The frozen breaded zucchini slices held their shapes and textures after baking them. We baked them like eggplant parmesan and ate like with pasta. Yum!

I am definitely making more of that. I also cut up the squash and zucchinis and they're freezing in the freezer currently.

Blueberry Pie

We've almost used up the berries we picked on Sunday. :D Both kids have been eating them by the handfuls. So have we.

Then I used 6 cups to make a pie and that's almost the end of the blueberries.

Other than the frozen ones in the freezer. I am saving those for smoothies.
Anyhow, I found this pie crust recipe sometime ago from Diana's Kitchen. It literally takes 5 minutes to whip up 2 crusts.


2 cups flour
1/2 cup sour cream
5 oz butter
Some of cold water, if needed

Put all ingredients in a food processor and mix until forms dough. If it's not forming, drizzle a teaspoon of cold water and continue mixing until a dough forms. Split the dough in half, let rest in the fridge for 10 minutes before rolling out the crusts.

This recipe makes nice, thick two 9" pie crusts.

I was wiping down the kitchen counters this weekend and noticed for the nth time of the coat of dust covering the crock pot and the Kitchen Aid mixer.

The next thought was, I have to call Grandma and see if she would sew a couple of cozies for me.

The following thought was, no, I don't want to put her to work. I'll just have to bite the bullet and do it myself.

I hunted down for the mixer cozy pattern tonight. Finally found this one, Sew Your Own Mixer Cover. Totally do-able.

I'll be at JoAnn's this weekend if anybody's looking for me. ;-)

A taste of summer

Yet another way for me to use up the zucchini and squash.

Slice a few of them, add them to sauteed onions and garlic, turkey smoke sausage, a few spices and herb, serve with rice.


It's good.

Let's add blueberries to the mix

This farm is new to us. We found it at PickYourOwn.org .

Dexter Blueberry Farm is just as it says. They have 20 acres of just blueberries. A very clean and well organized farm.

We were there today and picked 7.5 lbs of blueberry for $11. Very nice! Most of them for us, and some for mom and dad. Pies, jams, pies. Yum! I've already put a tray to freeze in the freezer. Once that one is done, I'll probably put in another one.

Another passing it down thing

We got this zucchini bread recipe from my mother-in-law. It's so good. High calorie heaven but who cares?

Zucchini Bread

Oven temp: 350F
Baking time: 1 hour 15 minutes
Yield: 2 loaves

Ingredient A:
3 eggs
2 cups sugar. Cut it down to 1 1/2 cups if you want to.
1 TBS vanilla extract
1 cup vegetable/canola oil

Ingredient B:
2 cups loosely packed shredded zucchini
2 cups flour
1 TBS cinnamon
2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1/4 tsp baking powder

Preheat oven to 350F.

Mix all ingredient A and beat until thick and frothy.
Stir in ingredient B till well mixed.
Bake in greased bread pan. Cool about 30 minutes on side before taking out of pan.

8:45PM: Half of a loaf is already gone.

Passing it down

The other day, my daughter was a bit upset because her best friend couldn't come and play with her. Thinking that it might help take her mind off her woes, I offered to teach her how to knit.

I am not the best teacher and I don't have the patience. Believe me.

I started a couple of rows. Then I showed her where to put her fingers on the needles, how to work the needles and the yarn. She certainly got the part on how to wind the yarn over the needles but we have a ways to go yet on holding the needles without having them either in death grips or too lose til they fell out of the stitches.


She's learning. She has patience for it for about 5 minutes, then she'd have me show her how to do it again ("Mommy, you do it."). She comes back to it throughout the day though.


I wonder, though, if she'd have an easier time learning to knit with right hand.

Steppies Blanket


Blanket Size: 42“ x 60“.

Yarn: 3 skeins of Bernat Sweet Stripes (1212 yards).

Needle: I used #8 29 inch circular needle.

Gauge: I am a bad knitter. I don’t use gauge for blankets. If the knit are close/tight enough without holes, we’re good to go.


Cast on 160 stitches.

Knit all stitches for 10 rows.

Pattern Block:
Row 11: K5, *(K10,P10) repeat * to the last 5 stitches, K5
Row 12: K5, *(P10, K10) repeat * to the last 5 stitches, K5
Repeat rows 11 and 12 7 more times (total of 16 rows)

NOTE: K5 at beginning and at end of row are for borders.

Row 27: K5, P5, *(K10, P10), repeat * to the last 10 stitches, K5, K5
Repeat row 27 15 more times (total of 16 rows)

Row 43: K5, *(P10, K10), repeat * to the last 15 stitches, P10, K5
Row 44: K5, *(K10, P10), repeat * to the last 15 stitches, K10, K5
Repeat rows 43 and 44 7 more times (total of 16 rows)

Row 59: K5, K5, *(P10,K10), repeat * to the last 10 stitches, P5, K5
Repeat row 59 15 more times (total of 16 rows)

Repeat Pattern Block from row 11 to row 59 until the desired blanket length is reached.

End border:
Knit all stitches for 10 rows.

The first of the berries

Makielski Berry Farm, located at the outskirt of Ann Arbor is a wonderful place. We absolutely love this farm. We go there every summer the past few years for picking berries and getting raw honey. Wonderful people they are.

We went there today with the kids to pick raspeberries. We were a bit anxious in the beginning because we were letting Adam running free at the patch. It turned out he was doing great and enjoying...playing in the sand between rows of raspberries. He had his own berry bucket and picked a few. He did well, considering he's two. He was able to pick ripe ones and didn't squish them. Sarah picked some, too, though I think she got tired towards the end and wanted something to drink. We didn't bring any drinks with us so we couldn't linger.

Note to self, bring water next time. :-P

We did, however, get to pick 3 quarts of raspberries.


Damn, the sink actually looks clean!



Brian is currently perusing the cookbooks, looking for raspberry crisp recipe. I've washed the berries, and put a tray in the freezer. I don't know how much he will need for the recipe, but if there is leftover berries after he's done, I may make some raspberry jams. Found this tutorial, Homemade Jam is so easy to make.

If we don't have enough, meh, we'll be going back next week or the week after anyways to pick more berries.

Unruly Squash

We have this battle every year with the squash bush; be it zucchinis, cucumbers and now, the yellow squash.

Laura sent a link last year about caging the bush in a tomato cage. Not only it should control the wild growth, it would also keep most of the fruit off the ground and avoid the yellowing on a side of the fruit.

We decided to try it with the cucumbers this year. We were going to get the cucumber trellis from Gardener's Supply, but I didn't feel justified to spend that much this year on a trellis. Instead, we used the extra tomato cages that we have.


It seemed to work great. We haven't tried this method with zucchinis and crooked neck squash, but we can try that next year.

For cucumbers, I recommend this method.

Raspberries? Blueberries? Anyone?

I think we're picking berries this weekend. Yes! Sarah recently developed a liking for blueberries. She liked cherries, at least picking them at the neighbors house. She'll like picking blueberries, too.

More squash

We had chili for dinner tonight. I doubled the batch with only 1 batch amount of beef. I put in a lot of cut up squash and zucchinis. Have to use up those zucchinis and squash.


Today, I learned from our foreman, an avid gardener himself, ways to preserve zucchinis and squash without losing the texture and taste of it.
One of the ways was to cut the up length wise. Roll them in breading, freeze them in a single layer. Once the pieces are frozen, transfer them to a ziplock bag and store them in the freezer. When we want to, take them out, bake them in the oven with parmesan cheese on top.

Voila, we have zucchini parmesan.

I can't wait to try this. Good thing we're getting that freezer soon. We need more room.

Suddenly it rains

Yesterday morning, the vacuum stopped working. It made suction sounds but there was nothing in the catcher. I thought maybe it's time to bite the bullet and get a new vacuum. I wasn't very happy about that.

Brian fixed it last night. He just took it apart and cleaned it inside out. It worked like a champ this morning.

Yay, that's one thing I don't have to buy, yet.

Then, last night, I was cutting Brian's hair and the trimmer was getting sluggish. I opened up the blades and cleaned it out. The thing would not work after it was put back together. We wasted about 10-20 minutes trying to fix it. I ended up cutting his hair with scissors. That took me a good 20-30 minutes because his hair was like a dense jungle! Once we got done cutting his hair, I played with the blade one more time. Took it apart, put it back together. Just one more time, see.

And it worked.


Makes me wanna go cuddle this guy:

Cardigan for little Thomas

I am more than halfway through with this cardigan. It's a beautiful cardigan. It took me a long time to do the cables in the panels because the yarn and the needles were tiny. It would have good faster, I think, on Cardigan for Arwen.



Well, little Thomas, you will get to wear this cardigan by the time you are 18 months old. I have plenty of time left. :D

Needle Size US# 6 DPN
Crochet hook for cord (optional)

c2b – Cross 2 back; knit into the back of the second stitch on the needle,
then knit the first stitch, slipping both stitches off the needle at the same time.

Co 48 sts. Join in round and use the tail as marker at the beginning of row.

Veggie Curry

Our crisper in the fridge is overflowing with the squash and zucchini, and only one eggplant. There are a few plant eggplants in the garden but they are not ready for picking, yet. I've used up one yesterday with the chicken curry.


We still have plenty of the curry sauce. I am cutting up a lot of the squashes, zucchinis and that lonely eggplant to put them in the curry sauce. We'll have a nice, healthy meal tonight. I guess I better figure out about protein, though. Maybe I'll add hard boiled egg to the mix.

I am hungry. I can't stop thinking about food at the moment.


I did a walk through the garden this morning. The cukes are finally getting big enough for picking. I didn't tho. Maybe tomorrow. I picked a few more squash and zucchini (what else?!). The bell peppers are getting big.

I have a few more potatoes eyes to plant. We were going to plant it yesterday but Brian was busy mowing the lawn and I was watching the kids playing.

On the other hand, by "watching" the kids playing, I got a lot of knitting done! I am almost halfway through one sleeve for Thomas' baby cardigan. A good thing too since the baby was born this morning. :D I made the cardigan size 18 months tho, so I have some leeway.
